SVS School for English
Creating opportunities through English lessons.
The SVS School for English, founded in 2006 by Sebastian Lawrance, aims to create educational opportunities for all. Through affordable, high-quality English courses, it opens up new professional prospects for learners, strengthens their self-confidence and promotes social participation.
In Sri Lanka, English is a crucial factor for employability, especially in urban and service-oriented sectors. Although the language is taught in schools, practical methods are often lacking. Before the pandemic, the school was self-supporting with over 450 students. However, economic slumps have brought many families into financial hardship, so the demand for affordable, high-quality language tuition is greater than ever.
The SVS School for English in Colombo, Sri Lanka, offers young adults affordable and practical English courses to improve their chances in the job market. After pandemic-related setbacks, the school is building a permanent teaching and management team and reducing course fees from €0.60 to €0.40 per hour – an important relief for low-income learners. The 100-hour courses focus on everyday and work-related communication while promoting intercultural exchange. In the long term, the school wants to expand its digital offerings, develop its own learning materials and cooperate with companies. The Lemonaid & ChariTea Foundation supports this development by financing personnel, infrastructure and organizational processes – and thus contributes to securing educational opportunities for disadvantaged young people in the long term.
