Feminist Approach to Technology
Overcoming the gender gap
through technical training.
FAT pursues a clear feminist approach in STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural science and technology). The organization combines technical education with the promotion of leadership qualities and collective structures. This creates spaces in which young women can implement their own projects, take on responsibility and develop sustainable solutions for their communities.
The digital divide particularly affects girls from marginalized families in India. Lack of access to computers or the internet, early marriage, unequal domestic duties and violence prevent many from demanding education and rights. Without technical skills, their opportunities for participation remain severely limited.
FAT addresses this very issue: Through practical technology workshops, leadership programs and peer learning, young women are given the opportunity to overcome barriers, build self-confidence and actively participate in social change.
The Feminist Approach to Technology (FAT) project empowers young women from marginalized backgrounds in India by giving them access to technical skills, leadership qualities and entrepreneurial know-how. As part of a collective management model, graduates themselves take on leadership roles, develop strategies for organizational management and problem-solving, and, with the support of the Lemonaid & ChariTea Foundation, establish local learning centers in Bihar. These centers are contact points for girls and young women, where they acquire digital skills, leadership skills and entrepreneurial thinking - an approach that combines education, self-determination and sustainable impact in the communities.
With the collectivization initiative, FAT is expanding its reach: Over three years, the organization is supporting 15 young women aged 18 to 30 who are building community collectives in groups of three and becoming social entrepreneurs. The program focuses on peer-to-peer learning, promoting entrepreneurial thinking and practical start-up skills. This creates a strong network that not only opens up new perspectives for the participants themselves, but also inspires the next generation of girls and thus makes a decisive contribution to equality and participation.
