Poverty reduction for women and their families in Yucatán, Mexico.

Ko'ox Taani was founded in Yucatán in 2015 to open up new prospects for families living in extreme poverty. The focus is on empowering indigenous women - with the aim of promoting their financial independence and social participation.
Ko'ox Taani works according to the graduation approach: an integrative model that accompanies families step by step in overcoming extreme poverty and building up a more stable income. The organization is firmly anchored in the region and acts as a civil society initiative for sustainable development on the Yucatán Peninsula.

Yucatán, a state in southeastern Mexico, is characterized by major social and economic inequalities. The gap between employment opportunities for men and women is significant. In particular, women often have limited access to paid work, which has a significant impact on the poverty rate. In 2022, 38.8% of the population of Yucatán lived below the poverty line. At the national level, around 45% of the population were considered to be affected by multidimensional poverty in 2021 - 75% of whom were of indigenous origin. Although the economy is showing signs of recovery since the COVID-19 pandemic, social participation remains a challenge for many marginalized groups.

The aim of the project is to sustainably improve the living conditions of 100 indigenous Mayan women and their families in eastern Yucatán. The economic situation of many households has been severely affected by the consequences of the pandemic, climate change and structural poverty. The initiative focuses on building climate-resilient structures and creating long-term sources of income by connecting to local and regional value chains and establishing savings groups. The Ko'ox Taani organization pursues a holistic approach that is tailored to the needs of families. This includes Further training and establishment of savings groups, promotion of agroecological and biodiverse food production, food security measures, social education programs and various income generation projects for families.
Lemonaid & ChariTea e.V. contributes to the financing of workshops, material costs and administrative structures - including the salaries of Ko'ox Taani employees on site.
